The Kalaripayattu club was officially started on IISc campus in 2019 by bunch of students who enjoy learning experience of Kalaripayattu (Kalari). Kalari is an ancient martial art. This art includes techniques such as different vyāyāmas (dynamic exercises) which can improve individual’s strength, transform their personality, and make them mentally & physically strong without employing any modern-day tools. It manifests in life as higher self-esteem, determination, and ability to withstand life’s hurdles. It turns you into a more confident and grounded person. Kalari practice is built with the purpose of developing elasticity and flexibility on the one hand, and durability and strength on the other hand. Kalari includes a sequence of dynamic movements and āsanas to strengthen the upper body, straighten the spine, and “opening up” the hip joints. This is especially useful in the current time when we spend most of our hours working ceaselessly at a desk or on a computer/mobile phone.
We are fortunate to have Sudarshan Sampath as the Guru (certified instructor). He is a world record holder for the "Longest Non-stop Display of Kalari". He has been practicing Kalaripayattu for 18+ years and conducts classes at Brigade Road, Bengaluru. He has given numerous international performances in countries like Indonesia, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.
